Gott Sei Dank
Thank God a pie
is resting on an ink pad.
Thank God a glass of water
understands you
long enough to quench your thirst.
If you thank God
for the little things
(and, of course, for things
that make no sense),
a large thing like a piano
will forget to fall on your head
as you amble innocently past.
**
The Circus
At a little known fork
in the road, ducks
are pecking at gunpowder.
Because there are no sparks
in their beaks, the ducks
do not explode.
Had the ducks
exploded, the show
would have been over,
and the tent, folded up
with the audience still inside it,
would have been
ceremoniously set on fire.
**
Poem
Pretty awful alternatives
will never be as pretty
as awfully pretty alternatives.
